Summer Cinema in Westchester County

From Julia B. Fee Sotheby’s International Realty, we hope that you are experiencing an enjoyable summer, and have discovered some of the unique seasonal happenings and activities going on in your local area. One of the best ways to pass a lovely summer evening is to attend an outdoor movie screening in one of the nearby parks, maybe while having a picnic with a few close family members and friends. Better still is when the movie qualifies as a true classic. Summer is an ideal season for taking in some of Hollywood’s most well-loved offerings as well as its biggest blockbusters, and film buffs should be happy to know that several of them are being showcased in park, waterfront and other settings this month, from Westchester County to New York City. The events are open to the public and free, and they begin when the sun goes down. For those interested in a fun night out this summer, allow us to share a few suggestions for upcoming outdoor film screenings.

This week on August 16, the beloved musical Annie is showing at the Hudson River Amphitheater in Yonkers, New York, presented by the Hudson River Museum’s Friday Night Film series. Adjacent to the museum, the amphitheater is located at 511 Warburton Avenue, and free parking is provided. Next up for the museum’s film series, the comedy musical Hairspray will be shown on August 23. On the night Annie screens, those who would rather watch a classic gangster flick can flock to Louis Engel Waterfront Park in Ossining on that date instead, where the 1938 film Angels with Dirty Faces will be presented right next to its original shooting location, Sing Sing Prison. The beautiful waterfront event is held under the park’s guard tower, at Secor Road and Westerly Road by the Ossining train station.

Those who would like to venture into the city can choose from a host of free outdoor movies this month. Tonight, film-goers can catch the recent hit Pitch Perfect on the waterfront at Riverside Park’s Pier 1, at West 70th Street. On August 15, Rocky shows on the Harbor View Lawn of Brooklyn Bridge Park, located at Old Fulton Street and Furman Street in Brooklyn, and on the 16th, Beetlejuice can be seen in Greenwich Village’s Hudson River Park, Pier 46, at Charles Street. Next week, E.T. screens on Monday at Bryant Park on Sixth Avenue between 40th and 42nd Streets, The Hunger Games is on Wednesday at Hudson River Park, the Hitchcock classic Vertigo is on Thursday at Brooklyn Bridge Park, and The Karate Kid is on Friday at Hudson River Park. The 11th Annual Central Park Film Festival also starts next week, with the films West Side Story, Hook, Silver Linings Playbook, The Shining and Raiders of the Lost Ark running from August 22-26 on Sheep Meadow at the 72nd Street cross drive. So pack some treats, a blanket and a lawn chair, and relax with some summer films.
