Nestled on the Connecticut River, East Haddam is a picturesque New England town rich in history, culture, and natural beauty. The town's 56.6 acres of rolling countryside are dotted with quaint neighborhoods, old farmsteads, scenic lakes, and state parks. Residents and visitors alike enjoy the tranquil natural setting of this region that the Nature Conservancy has named one of the "The Last Great Places". Beginning in the early 1900’s, East Haddam became known as a resort area offering the appeal of rural charm and natural scenery.
Completed in 1914, the imposing castle-like residence of famous actor William Gillette sits high on the banks of the Connecticut River and is now the centerpiece of Gillette Castle State Park. Devil's Hopyard State Park sits on the Eightmile River where a spectacular waterfall cascades through a hemlock gorge.
Culture and the arts also play an important role in town life. First opened in 1877, the Goodspeed Opera House produces nationally acclaimed musicals and features a 400-seat theater, scene shop, and musical library. In the summer, "Music on the River" brings numerous musical groups to the Goodspeed Green on the Connecticut River. The East Haddam Historical Society Museum chronicles the history of the town. Historic sites include the Nathan Hale School House, a one-room school house, built in 1750, where Connecticut Revolutionary War hero Nathan Hale served as schoolmaster.
