Incorporation in 1639, the town of Essex consists of three villages: Essex, Centerbrook and Ivoryton. Settled around the Falls River and Connecticut River, Essex boasts scenic views, historic architecture, gracious tree-lined streets, exciting shops, marinas, acclaimed restaurants and a remarkable history. A wonder within itself, Essex received the distinction of being names "Best Small Town in America" in 1995.

With five marinas, three yacht clubs and easy access to the Long Island Sound, Essex is truly a boater's paradise. Dock your boat and walk to fabulous shopping and many outstanding restaurants. If you are a fisherman, the Connecticut River and the Sound are fertile waters for a variety of species including shad, striped bass, blue fish and black fish. The sound is perfect for sailing and for power boaters, it is an easy day trip to Long Island.

Essex is famous for hosting a multitude of parades, including Groundhog Day (with Essex Ed), the "Burning of the Ships Parade" (commemorating the 1814 Bristish raid that left 29 ships burning in the harbor), and many others. Community activism is evidenced by many civic groups, such as Rotary, Lions, Merchants Group, Historical Society, garden Club, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and others.
