Two Condominium Units with Ties to Guilford’s Early History Listed with William Pitt Sotheby’s International Realty

Guilford, Conn. (December 7, 2018) — William Pitt Sotheby’s International Realty today announced that the firm has listed for sale two condominium units with ties to the early history of Guilford. The listings at 186 and 188 Whitfield Street are both currently on the market for $869,000, and are represented by Guilford agent Jake Wyman.

The properties on Whitfield Street were built in 1850 and were originally part of a “double house,” which was an early duplex-style residence commonly constructed in New Haven, Conn. at the time. According to the Guilford Preservation, the architect of this home is unknown, but it’s widely believed to have been New Haven architect Henry Austin, or another architect who used Austin’s plans as a guide.

Locally known as the William Faulkner house after early Connecticut newspaper publisher William Faulkner, the entire property was restored in 1975 and was updated again for today’s living standards. The renovations preserved architectural details such as each unit’s matching doorways and a full facade veranda with a cross-braced balustrade.

Both 186 and 188 Whitfield Street offer three bedrooms and three full bathrooms, as well as a full-sized laundry area off of the second floor’s master suite. A new garage was also constructed that combines with an enclosed car port for two large covered parking spaces per unit. Additional updates to each home include new HVAC systems, plumbing, electrical and septic systems, as well as new windows, with the exception of the historic “walk out” windows. In the 1800s, the owners of this property were taxed on the number of windows in their home with the exception of walk out windows on the front of the home that were considered doorways for tax purposes.

“This property truly has a fascinating and historical tale,” said Wyman. “Not only does this offering present an opportunity to own a fully updated condominium, but it also represents the unique chance to own a piece of Guilford’s history as Whitfield Street is one of the town’s original roads. I am honored to represent both of these exceptional units.”
