Griswold

Lush landscapes, rushing rivers, sunflower festivals and an abundance of recreational options abound throughout Griswold’s village-style communities.

The town of Griswold, a borough of Jewett City along the northeastern edge of New London County, is home to about 12,000 residents within its 37-square-mile area. Several smaller villages within the town include Pachaug, Hopeville, Nathanieltown, Glasgo, Rixtown, Doaneville and Kaalmanville.

Two rivers, the Pachaug and Quinebuag, flow through the community, which in its early years was a fishing ground and later evolved into a mill town. The site of a former woolen mill was converted into the 554-acre Hopeville Pond State Park, a popular recreation area among residents and visitors.

The community takes pride in its historical past, and is home to the Griswold Historical Society Museum. Several notable sites within Griswold are listed on the National Register of Historic Places: Ashland Mill Bridge which spans the Pachaug River; the circa 1770 Avery House; the historic Edward Cogswell House and Kinne Cemetery, which has been in use since the early 1700’s. Also of historic significance is the circa 1741 Timothy Lester Farmstead and the Slater Library and Fanning Annex, built in 1884.

Several attractions within the community include the Buttonwood Farm, which produces farm-fresh ice cream and is the site of various festivals and festivities throughout the year; Geer Tree Farm; Stone Bridge Farm and the River Ridge Golf Course. Griswold is unofficially known as the “Sunflower Town.” Each June, the town hosts its popular Sunflower City Festival, and Buttonwood Farm also hosts an annual Sunflowers for Wishes Festival, to benefit the Make-a-Wish Foundation.

Outdoor enthusiasts are drawn to Pachaug Pond, which features a marina, boat launch and campground. Boating, camping, hiking, pond fishing and swimming are also popular attractions at Hopeville Pond State Park.
