Listening and communication skills are essential elements in this business. Real estate is not about selling houses, or decorating skills. It is about selling yourself and understanding not just what is said but what is not said as well.
During the years I managed a real estate office, I consistently told my agents "This is a big expensive business. It is not enough to just be very good at what you do, you want your clients to like and associate with you." I rarely see someone buying an expensive property from an agent they do not like, trust or respect (it can happen, but not often.) Houses are not commodities such as diamonds or cars, (if they were, everyone would be buying on the internet and there would be no need for good agents).There is a huge element of association attached to the transaction. It is not enough to find that right home for people or to sell the house successfully for the highest price in the shortest amount of time and with the least amount of upheaval to the homeowner. Only after they refer another client to you, can you say a job well done. I firmly believe that one can be a complete lady, comport oneself with dignity and be an exceedingly successful real estate agent.
Expert technological skills are essential and a given. People skills are what set an agent apart as a top negotiator, closer and exceptional Realtor. Knowledge of the market is the power that gets you the sale and the repeat business.
