In December we informed our readers of an important initiative we were undertaking with AmeriCares, a nonprofit humanitarian organization devoted to providing both immediate emergency response and long-term assistance programs for those in need all over the world. William Pitt Sotheby’s International Realty offered to extend support to AmeriCares in its work to provide relief to the victims of Hurricane Sandy, and set up a donation program with the organization whereby company employees and sales professionals could make donations through the end of the year simply by visiting www.americares.org/williampitt. We promised to match the donations made by staff and associates at our three partner firms, one to one.
Today we are thrilled to announce the results of our donation campaign. Over the course of the month of December our company raised approximately $28,000 for Americares to disburse in relief aid for victims of the hurricane, with staff and agents donating close to $14,000, and our company matching that number. We are tremendously proud of everyone at our company who gave so generously to this important cause. It is wonderful to be part of an office environment in which people care so deeply about giving back, and for stepping in to provide meaningful support when a crisis like Hurricane Sandy arises.
The Hurricane Sandy Disaster Relief Fund that we supported has already made measurable differences in the lives of many who have been affected by this devastating storm. Our hope is that our donations will help AmeriCares continue to do the invaluable work they have been performing since the storm hit, including providing relief supplies, emergency medical assistance and bottled water to victims in particularly hard-hit areas of Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, Connecticut and New Jersey. Of all of the donations made to the relief fund, 98% will be used in relief efforts, and we are delighted to have our contributions are among them.
We have a history of involvement with meaningful causes and charitable organizations in our local communities, and even worked with AmeriCares in September 2012 in their work to deliver medical and humanitarian aid to residents of Guatemala living in poverty. We are pleased to do our part to help make a difference once again, and look forward to maintaining our spirit of giving in 2013.
