William Pitt Sotheby’s International Realty Lists Former Lakeside Estate of Bob’s Discount Furniture Co-Founder Stanley Adelstein

32-acre property previously served as the camp of Connecticut Rivers Council of the Boys Scouts of America

Salem, Conn. – November 20, 2015 – William Pitt Sotheby’s International Realty announced today that the firm has listed a waterfront estate that was formerly owned by Stanley Adelstein, a philanthropist and the co-founder of Bob’s Discount Furniture. The property also once served as a Boy Scouts camp. Essex agent team Jennifer and Jane Associates, comprising Jennifer Caulfield and Jane Macy Pfeffer, have the listing, which is offered at $3,750,000.

Bob’s Discount Furniture, a privately owned regional chain of furniture stores along the eastern United States, was founded in 1991 in Newington, Conn. Now corporately based out of Manchester, Conn., the popular furniture store became widely recognized for founder Bob Kaufman’s distinctive appearances in its advertisements. Adelstein retired from his prominent involvement with Bob’s Discount Furniture in April 2013.

The 32-acre former Boy Scout camp, located on the banks of Gardner Lake in Salem, Conn., was purchased by Adelstein in 2002, and transformed into an extensive lakeside estate with hiking trails, a floating dock, 1,000 feet of direct lakeside access, lush green lawns, decks, koi ponds with streams and waterfalls, and a luxurious pool complex.

The four-bedroom, three full and two half-bath Adirondack-style main house displays extensive stone veneer and cedar shake shingles, as well as expansive windows to take in the surrounding view. The interior boasts a great room with a gourmet kitchen and bar and dining area, which contains an original stone fireplace inscribed with the Boy Scouts motto. Entertainment amenities throughout the 16,072 square-foot home include a movie theatre, billiard room, wine cellar and game room with kitchen, refreshment bar and second inscribed fireplace. The property also has two separate self-sustaining, fully livable cottages.

“Adelstein had a vision for the residential opportunity of this property, and he embraced it,” said Caulfield. “Nature, entertainment, sports and family fun were without a doubt the inspiration behind this extraordinary lakeside paradise.”

“The thought behind this home is truly remarkable,” added Pfeffer. “Through Adelstein’s generosity and community spirit, the property was even host to many New England charity events benefiting organizations including the American Red Cross of Connecticut and Massachusetts.”
