"The Stone Store" An 1800 Greek Revival Landmark

“The Stone Store," an 1809 Greek Revival landmark, lies at the focal point of three roads that bring visitors to Chester village. Having undergone multiple modifications, the 4788 sq.ft property is a virtual timeline of Chester's history for over 200 years. Originally a dry goods store, it has housed a tavern, the Library, church services and the Post Office. When Peter Good and Jan Cummings took possession in 1984, the second floor was a five-room residential apartment. Working with renowned architect Tom Norton they converted the apartment to a two-floor design office, housing the award-winning graphic design firm Cummings & Good. In 1993, they doubled the size of the building, preserving the extraordinary aesthetics of the original granite construction. The design studio was expanded into the addition, which features a 20 ft high ceiling, exposed stone walls and skylights. Improvements included a 1515 sq. ft ground level tenant space with handicapped access and open, light-filled space. Completed in 2006, the original 676 sq.ft first floor space was returned to its 19th-century aesthetic. With solid Maple floors, exposed Chestnut beams and stone walls, it is now home of the popular C&G Apparel. In the 2nd floor gallery,C&G Posters & Prints hosts poetry readings, book signings, and openings. The Stone Building provides an ideal and flexible mixed-use mosaic of residential, retail, studio and income property. https://www.cummings-good.com/ https://www.visitchesterct.com/
