Trending in 2014 for Home Decor

Welcome to 2014! Only a week into the New Year not much has changed but we all know the interior design trends are about to! Get ready for what home décor is in and what’s out for this year.

Trends of 2014

According to the WSJ, last year was all about the all-white kitchens, woodland creature statues (May be a trend because of the vast popularity of the song “What Does the Fox Say”) Ikat prints (a patchy print), and books converted to décor. The “Belgian look” was the premise of the style, which consisted of a mix of “antiques” with linen upholstery and neutral tones, and is typically loved by “Belgian tastemakers” (like Alex Vervoordt). With inspiration from the ‘70s, the contrast of brass and bronzes beside detailed embellished wallpaper and lace was also really “in” in 2013.

Radiant Orchid the 2014 Color

The Pantone 2014 Color of the Year was announced as Radiant Orchid, but interior designers are also playing around with shades of blue. Blogger Paloma Contrera of wrote, “From rich, saturated colors like navy and indigo to bright, vibrant shades like peacock blue and cobalt, blue will continue to reign supreme in the coming year.” The typical muted and Art Deco-inspired palate is still in, but some designers are dabbling in bright splashes of acid yellow!

Texture is important in 2014 home décor as we see Macramé and fiber-art wall hangings (a sculpture for your wall that adds texture and replaces wallpaper), and corduroy upholstery. This combination leads to a more preppy and casual feel in your home. As a contrast to the abundant texture, heavy drapes are not in style any longer, and window sheers made of linens, cloth or sheer wool are now the popular window embellishment. You will also see a lot of Acrylic furniture (clear chairs, cocktail tables, or entire dining room tables) because “they are light and go with everything,” states design expert Kris Kolar in an interview with Home and Garden.

We hope this helps you stay on trend with your interior design plans this year!
