Willard Scott’s name is recognizable across the nation, mostly for his 30-year career as the weatherman on the NBC Today Show. We can all recognize his passion for his work, but not many know about his fondness for his Hut. Mr. Scott talked off screen with The Wall Street Journal about his one-bedroom, one-bath waterfront cottage, which he has recently listed with William Pitt Sotheby’s International Realty for $975,000.
Mr. Scott first set eyes on this home while walking along the Guilford, Connecticut shoreline (a gem of Connecticut that many have not yet discovered); he said that it reminded him of the “fishing cottages that he had seen in Ireland.” Mr. Scott exclaimed that he knew instantly that he wanted it to be his future home: “That’s the house I’ve been looking for all my life!”* The sweeping views of Long Island Sound are memorizing and extremely romantic. Sit on the patio or deck for a few minutes to fully take in the scenery, and you will understand why this home captured Mr. Scott’s attention. It is the ideal home for bird watching, relaxing and enjoying nature at its finest.
The cottage was built in the 1860s, and was used as an office for a fish-oil company (this was when the home was first nicknamed the Hut!). Mr. Scott has expanded the home by almost 1,000 square feet, but has kept the historic and nautical appeal of the Hut with its original fireplace and chestnut floorboards. It has all of the modern amenities that any present day buyer would want, including a washer/dryer, central air conditioning, dishwasher, and two driveways with off street parking. The property also includes a one-bedroom, one-bath guest home or artist studio, and is a short walk to the local beach (owned by Mulberry Point Association, where residents can choose to join).
