Hartsdale

The hamlet of Hartsdale, with a total area of just under a square mile, is located in the Westchester County town of Greenburgh. The cozy hamlet lies on the Bronx River about 20 miles north of New York City and is served by Metro-North’s Harlem line. The transformation of this former farming community into a more cosmopolitan commuter village took place at a swift pace from the late 1800s to around 1940, when a large portion of the hamlet’s farmland and extensive estates were divided into smaller subdivisions upon which newer homes and condominiums were constructed. Today, a handful of working farms remain, and several hundred acres of lush and lovely parkland exists for the enjoyment of residents throughout Secor Woods Park, Ridge Road Park and Rumbrook Park. Hartsdale is also home to many notable “firsts.” Among them, the country’s first pet cemetery was founded here in 1896, and the first Carvel ice cream store in the nation opened in Hartsdale in 1934.
