Farmington

Farmington is deeply rooted in New England history with George Washington referring to it as "the village of pretty houses" because of the large colonial estates.

The town is deeply rooted in New England history. George Washington would pass through Farmington regularly during the Revolutionary War and referred to the town as “the village of pretty houses” because of the large Colonial estates lining Main Street. After giving up many different portions of territory to other surrounding towns over the years, Farmington now borders the towns of Avon, Burlington, West Hartford and Plainville. The town is covered mostly by forest, but meadows and hills can be found in the east. Residents and visitors enjoy fishing and rafting down the Farmington River or hiking one of the local mountain ridges such as Pinnacle Rock or Rattlesnake Mountain. Sweeping views of Farmington and surrounding areas can be enjoyed atop the 165-foot Tower at Talcott Mountain State Park, and various French impressionist masterpieces can be viewed at the Hill-Stead Museum, considered “perhaps the finest Colonial Revival House and museum in the United States” (National Historic Landmark Report).

Farmington has been home to Miss Porter’s School, an all girls school, since 1843. The most notable alumnus is Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy Onassis. Enjoy a polo match or take polo lessons at the Farmington Polo Club, located on 60-plus acres along the Farmington River. The town is also home to wonderful shopping at Westfarms Mall, featuring over 160 shops, golf at Westwoods Golf Course, numerous trails, Farmington Valley Greenway and Rails-to-Trails.
