William Pitt Sotheby’s International Realty Lists Historic Colonial Residence with Prominent Past Home Ownership

Property boasts modern updates while maintaining its original architectural integrity

Norwalk, Conn. – January 21, 2016 – William Pitt Sotheby’s International Realty announced today that the firm has listed a historic Colonial-style home with a prominent series of past owners, including direct descendants of former President John Adams. The updated 1820s residence, which is located in the town of Norwalk, Conn., is represented by Southport agent Chris Titus and his team, TSS Realty Group, and offered at $699,000.

Jonathan T. Adams, a shoemaker and later a successful Norwalk, Conn. butcher shop owner noted as a direct descendant of President John Adams, was one of the first residents of the home. He purchased both the residence and nine acres of property in 1854 for $300. Adams’ son, Elbert S. Adams, inherited it in 1904. Elbert was known as an active Republican, and his political involvement led him to be appointed Postmaster of Norwalk by President Taft, a position he held for nine years. The property has undergone many changes, expansions and additions over the years, all of which have been respectfully integrated into the original construction and architecture of the house. These include a stone patio, two-car garage, a relocation of the home’s front door, a new shed, an in-ground pool and, most recently, a kitchen remodel.

The five-bedroom, four-bath, two-and-a-half story Colonial-style residence boasts an uncut stone foundation, wood framing and clapboard siding with an asphalt shingle roofline that is dominated by three gable formations and an addition to the right side of the house. Three open porches greet visitors with a welcoming atmosphere and provide easy access outdoors.

The residence’s interior includes ten rooms in total, featuring two family rooms, a recently remodeled kitchen, a foyer with one of two fireplaces, and dining room. The rear entrance opens to a corridor through which the kitchen and second family room, an addition to the house, can be accessed. While updated to cater to modern demands, the home maintains much of its early 19th century architecture. This preserved quality is evident in various details throughout the house, particularly in the home’s basement, where a large chimney stack, original floor boards, hand hewn primary and secondary beams, as well as other historic elements can be found.

“This home is a true testament to preserved history and is an excellent example of how a home can be modified to meet the demands and wishes of modern-day society without compromising its original details,” said Titus. “The structure, which is a residential landmark in town, is incredibly well-kept and updated, and ready for its next lucky owners to call it home.”
