Hot Property: Where the Emerald Isle Meets the Gold Coast

By Tyler R. Morrissey

Spanning both Stamford and Greenwich sits an extraordinary property that transports you to an entirely different region of the world. It’s hard to believe you are just an hour from New York City and not in the middle of an Irish countryside when you bask in the gentle rolling hills and dales that are surrounded by 17th century stonewalls. At 242 June in Stamford and 23 Carrington Drive in Greenwich, this emerald isle-like offering has a storied past with tons of amenities to explore. Stamford agents June Rosenthal and Linda Sentementes represent the listing, which is offered for $12,500,000, one of the highest priced properties on the market in the area.

The entire property is known as June Hill Farm after the June family, the original owners from back when the farm comprised the 242 acres for which the property got its official legal address—242 June Road. Rose and Ernest June built the original cottage on the west side of June Road and eventually expanded the farm as their family grew. Gwen (June) Ketchum is the granddaughter of Rose and Ernest and lived in the original cottage when she was born while her father completed their home further down June Road. She is one of the last descendants of Rose and Ernest that is still living on the road that carries her family’s namesake.

“It was a beautiful property and still is to this day,” Ketchum said. “The original cottage that is no longer there was primitive compared to what resides on the land today. One story I do recall is when I was younger my family had a dog that would keep me away from one of the cliffs on the property so I wouldn’t get hurt.”

The nearly 40-acre property features several equestrian amenities, including a newer nine-stall barn, paddocks and access to the adjacent 150 square-mile Greenwich Trail System. The contemporary Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired residence sits on the Stamford side high on a hill overlooking the whole property, with its own gunite swimming pool and huge glass windows that bring nature right into the home.

“I actually lived near June Road for 34 years as well and one of the biggest advantages to this area is how convenient it is to everything,” Rosenthal said. “You are just seven or eight minutes to downtown Stamford, but you get the best of both worlds with a stunning countryside and exciting cityscape.”

The other home sits on the Greenwich side at 23 Carrington Drive. The property also includes a second swimming pool and a tennis court and sits on the site of the original cottage. It has been beautifully crafted with the finest finishes and offers some of the best country views in Fairfield County.

“What I love most about this home is the wraparound porch,” Rosenthal said. “It goes around the entire house and when you walk out of any room on the lower level you are met with breathtaking views. It’s the perfect setting to have a cup of coffee in the morning or a drink in the evening to take in the nighttime sky.”

While much has changed on the property since the June family called the land home, some things have remained the same as the historic property gets ready for the next family to write its next chapter.

“My great grandfather’s family had almost 300 acres of land at one point,” Ketchum said. “Around 1914 he had a skunk farm where he raised over 500 skunks, because at the time black skunk fur was perceived as very valuable. I do go back to visit the property often. In fact there is still a huge oak tree on the property that was there when I was a child. I bring my grandchildren to look at the barn all the time.”
