Hot Property: Elegance at Osborn Road

By: Andrew Wood and Tyler Morrissey

The Museum of the City of New York this summer has the “Elegance in the Sky” exhibit celebrating the high rise residences designed by famous New York City architect Rosario Candela. At the same time, Rosario Candela’s own home that he designed and built for himself, and lived in during the 1930s, is on the market right now, as reported by Brownstoner.

The 10,000+ square-foot Mediterranean-style residence is located in Harrison, N.Y., and for sale for $6,950,000. It took him seven years to build the house. Today, the home is completely renovated, but also retains its original architectural integrity. Notably, the exterior was used for the James Bond movie Spectre.

Candela’s notoriety as a renowned apartment building architect began in the 1920s after he immigrated to New York City from Sicily in 1909. Candela’s greatest work would occur during the latter half of the 1920s, when he designed numerous apartment buildings on the Upper East Side, primarily on Fifth Avenue and Park Avenue, as well as at Sutton Place and other locations.

The home Candela designed at 63 Osborn Road features a Ludowici tiled roof, wraparound slate terraces and a Juliet balcony. Interior highlights include an expansive, 50-foot sunken living room with hand-painted plaster ceiling finials and French doors to the terrace, dining room with hand-painted touches overhead and tri-color hardwood inlaid floor underfoot, and the state-of-the-art kitchen, blending tradition with modern amenities. The kitchen has travertine marble, a hand-carved farm sink, retracting appliance docking shelves, and warming and beverage drawers.

The home’s exterior features are just as impressive. The backyard is highlighted by a 70-foot pool and a large outdoor kitchen, which are both perfect for this time of year. Also, the impeccably landscaped property includes a pool house equipped with two bathrooms and a sitting area, as well as mature specimen and fruit trees.
