It’s a sure bet that the New London County town of Ledyard and the Mystic Coast region have much to offer residents and visitors alike.

The town of Ledyard, located along the east bank of the scenic Thames River, encompasses 40 square miles and is home to 15,000 residents. The community, which includes the Gales Ferry district, is a major destination with visitors who come to town to visit the Foxwood Resort Casino, owned and operated by The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation, which has a reservation in the town’s northeastern corner.

Incorporated in 1836, Ledyard is also home to several major employers, including Electric Boat and Pfizer. Situated south of town in Groton is the Naval Submarine Base New London, also a major employer to residents.

The Gales Ferry district, which is largely residential, is situated around Route 12, one of Ledyard’s main commercial corridors. The area includes a public library, post office and several historic districts. Ledyard Center is also a principal community in town.

Gales Ferry has deep roots in intercollegiate athletic events and has been home to the oldest in the nation which dates back to 1878: rowing competitions on the Thames between Harvard and Yale Universities. That tradition, although on a smaller scale, still takes place each June when the Harvard/Yale regatta draws spectators to the riverfront.

A former farming community, Ledyard experienced major growth in the 1960s, when it evolved into a bedroom community for major employers, boosting its population from 5,300 to nearly 15,000. Decades later, a new economic engine would benefit both the town and the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation: the Foxwoods Resort Casino in Ledyard’s northeastern section, opened in 1992. The town also hosts the popular Ledyard Fair each September.

The town is serviced by volunteer fire companies as well as a volunteer emergency medical squad. Ledyard’s public school system comprises a high school, a middle school and three elementary schools.
