The village of Housatonic, situated along the northern edge of the town of Great Barrington, is home to approximately 1,109 residents. The Berkshire County community, which encompasses a mere one square mile, was named after the mighty Housatonic River, which runs through its center. Formed in the early 1800’s, in its heyday the village enjoyed a hub of activity around its coveted paper and textile mills. Today, several of those old factory buildings have been preserved and revitalized, and enjoy new life as art galleries, public, commercial and retail spaces. Two former mill sites, Rising Paper Mill and Monument Mills, are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Residents of Housatonic enjoy the community’s quaint village atmosphere, yet are within close proximity to the myriad cultural, scenic, recreational, educational, commercial and artistic opportunities offered just a short distance away in bustling Great Barrington. Housatonic is also bordered to the north by Stockbridge and West Stockbridge.
