Incorporated in 1835 and named for the town of Ashford, where many of its settlers came from, New Ashford has retained its agricultural roots through the decades. The town is situated in a small natural valley within the Taconic Mountains, and is home to the former Brodie Mountain ski area. New Ashford, through which Route 7 crosses, is bordered by Adams to the East, Hancock to the west, Lanesborough to the south, Williamstown to the north, and Cheshire to the southeast. Students in town attend schools in surrounding communities, including Lanesborough Elementary School and Mount Greylock Regional High School in Williamstown. Several institutions of higher learning are also located nearby, including Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts in North Adams, Berkshire Community College in Pittsfield and the private Williams College in Williamstown. The nearest rail and bus service operates out of Pittsfield.
