The Columbia County town of Canaan, through which the mighty Taconic Mountains rise in its northwest corner, covers an area of 36.9 square miles and is home to about 1,570 residents.

The scenic town of Canaan was settled around 1759, and eventually founded in 1772 as Kings District, although it was renamed Canaan in 1788. One of the town’s most notable residents is Albert “Al” Roker Jr., a popular television personality, weather forecaster, author and actor who owns a home in Canaan.
